House Church

The early church met in houses and was the living body of Christ. Early Methodism focused on the Class and Band system which met in people’s homes, and it made an impact on the communities around those homes. At Cornerstone, as we have moved beyond some of our buildings, we are looking back to what the early church was, a movement seeking to make a difference for Jesus.
As we build on this vision of a network of house churches, the phrase “small group church” may be more apt. Our Abbeytown and Silloth congregations meet midweek in homes. Our Caldbeck congregation meets midweek in the schoolroom as we develop the chapel for entirely different use. Two of our Wigton Link Groups meet in homes and one meets in the chapel as they have outgrown the average size living room. Some in houses, and some in churches, each one is based on a less formal expression of church, and each forms a central part of our church network.
In Wigton and Aspatria, we also meet on Sunday morning for a celebration. Many will come from our house churches to join in this gathered act of worship, but we believe that church extends beyond this Sunday celebration.
All of our small groups fulfil our belief that there are 5 key elements to being a church:
When each of these happens, we believe that church happens.
