Abbeytown

Abbeytown history

Abbeytown is a lovely little village on the Solway Plain, with a shop, a pub and a Primary School.  The town grew around Holme Cultram Abbey, founded in 1150 and still in use today (although rebuilt a couple of times since then)  and the Methodists had a chapel here from 1869 to 2018.

a house church

In 2018, worshipping at the chapel became difficult because of numbers and a dilapidated building, so we set up a house church, which now meets at different homes around the village.  It’s a lovely intimate and small worship experience with a personal feel, meeting on Sunday afternoons.

Community

Abbeytown is a great community to be involved in and we have often had a presence at local events and activities. Cornerstone has a strong relationship with the primary school, with Rev Phil being a governor there.  We also have links with the Abbey and the pub, run litter picks and our Christmas Angels make an appearance here!

Style of worship

A House Church is a small, more personal worship experience so possibly less formal than a bigger church.  The music is provided by either through CD’s or YouTube and singing is enthusiastic, despite the small number of people!  After we have opened the Bible we have time to chat and enjoy a cuppa.
